One more thing...

Hey folks,
One last thing before bedtime that I just remembered.
My family got the new Capernwray 2006 holiday brochure through today and there are about 3/4 pictures from our Spring school in it.
I think you can download it from the website so if you fancy spotting our Bible school, do it! There's a fantastic picture on the inside back cover of Jacqui and Kendra on the rope swing, huge big picture, just brilliant. See if you can spot me in there too! There are some obvious ones and some subtle ones but there's a wee challenge for you.
Man, I hope you guys have enjoyed about 28 posts all tonight!

Was just wondering one other thing, could people put me on their links on their blogs? I don't want to sound like I wanna take over the known blogging world, but it'd be great if more people knew about me wee blog. Thanx! Feel free to post like mad about anything on me site or indeed the Capernwray holidays brochure.

Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland, we'll support you ever more!

This is the last post of the evening/morning but I shall leave you, for the mean time, with a wee tribute to our wee football team. The victorious team that beat England recently of course.
This is our national stadium and although this picture is from a few years ago, it shows Windsor Park (the stadium itself) and a lot of Belfast in the background brilliantly. You can see a big yellow building in the background and that's one of two main hospitals in Belfast. I think I was born at that one. Not sure though.

The badge you can see is the crest of the Northern Irish football team. Ohh, I'm going to have to go, I'm filling up with so much national pride...

Check out Mr.President!

Ok, this dude was apparently a US president, James Buchanan the 15th US president between 1857 and 1861 but just look at what he says! "My Ulster blood is my most priceless heritage..."
For those who don't know, Ulster is another name for Northern Ireland. It actually refers back to areas that the original island of Ireland was split up into (I hope that's the correct way to explain this) and Ulster is made up of the 6 counties of Northern Ireland along with 3 counties from the Republic of Ireland.
Ulster is actually a name that protestants, rather than Catholics would use.
This fella, Jimmy, is from Northern Ireland! Ohhh yeah! US president, thank you very much. We produce only the finest for export.

Let me also explain this picture further. This is what we in N. Ireland call, "muriels". We actually mean, "murals". These are massive paintings on the sides of houses. They are, or were, mainly all political and to do with paramilitaries (our terrorists if you like) and could be found in the cities, big towns or in places were there was a strong paramilitary presence.
These muriels are common and a lot more are becoming about our heritage and so on. I'm near sure there's even one for Steve McQueen.

A Map

This is a map of my beautiful country. If you look carefully you can see the town, Dromore, where I come from. See if you can find it! (you have to say that in a cheesy kid's TV presenter voice)

More Giants Causeway

This is another picture of the beautiful Giants Causeway. Just enjoy.

The Giants Causeway

This is one of the most beautifulest parts of Northern Ireland. This is the Giants Causeway. A natural wonder as these pillars formed naturally. There is a story of a giant, Finn Macoul (not sure how to spell it, sorry fellow Northern Irelanders) building these stones as a bridge to Scotland, hence the name, the Giants Causeway. Type in the Giants Causeway or Finn Macoul (see if you can find the correct spelling and post it!) on Google and I'm sure there is much more information there.

My Beautiful Land

Well everyone,
I said I'd post some pictures of my beautiful country and I thought I'd start with the flag of my country. Don't know if it's best to start with the flag but more pictures are following soon.
Just so you know, my beautiful country is called Northern Ireland, not Ireland, not Britain, not England but Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland.

I got a hair cut

This is me and me new hair cut. I like it although it's a good bit shorter than before.

I hope and trust you all had a fantabulous Christmas. My Christmas was ok, nothing exciting really. You get to about 3/4pm and it just kinda stops. It's weird. It's like, "flip, what are we going to do until we go to bed?"
Generally new DVDs or movies are always a good bet.

I played football yesterday, that was exciting. The guys from my home church had the traditional Boxing Day (the day after Christmas day for all you Americans) football (soccer for all you Americans) match. We just play among ourselves and it was about 11/12 a side on a full side pitch. It was freezing yesterday morning but we played on anyway.
The game ended 6-6 despite one team (not my team) having many quality players strangely all on the same team.
I scored a hat trick (3 goals for all you Americans) so that was a personal achievement.

So yes, yesterday I think was more action packed and exciting than Christmas day itself.

Please post and let me know how your Christmas day was and if you played in any traditional Boxing Day football matches with the guys from my home church too.

Happy Christmas everyone!

I just had to do this!
Happy Christmas everyone! I don't know who'll read this or anything like that but I thought seeing I got 5 minutes in the middle of Christmas day, I would post and make sure everyone I know and everyone who reads this knows I wish them a very happy Christmas!

I hope you are all enjoying the day. Enjoying the food, the family (where possible), the presents and all that jazz.

No Christmas message from a Christian would be complete without the mention of Jesus. I know some people groan and complain when Jesus is mentioned again and again but you know what, I'm not going to make excuses and I'm not going to explain Him away. Underneath all the food, family, wrapping, tinsel, Christmas trees, presents, sweets, church and more food, it's all about Jesus. It was about Him to start with but we managed to pile that much stuff on top of Him that we completed blurred Him out and covered Him up.

I know you guys know that, I'm not out to insult your intelligence, I just hope that on this day, the Saviour's day, that you take time out to spend it with Him.
As one of my friends at my new church said, "hope you enjoy the birthday party"

Typical!

So,
I finally got a picture of me, with me long hair, on me profile.
I went to the hairdressers today as I needed it trimmed, badly. But, I went in with a picture of what I wanted and my hair is now shorter than I had imagined and shorter than the guy's hair in the picture.
I sound bitter, but I'm not. I like my new hair.
But it was shorter than I imagined. I'll have to change the picture on me profile now. That's ok, I now know how to.
Well, what an adventurous day.

I'm home!

Once again, the title for this blog pretty much explains it all.
But I do want to elaborate.
I got home yesterday (Thurs 22nd) around 4.30pm. I got back to Dromore, Co.Down in Northern Ireland. I got back to 4 Lynn Crescent and to my mum, dad, brother and sister. I got back to my mum Sharon, my dad Jeffrey, my sister Amy and my brother Andrew.
I am thankful to Becky, my co-worker, for taking me to the airport.
I am home now. aaahhhhh.
I am really looking forward to this break and to time off, time away from a busy city, from living under the run way for Manchester airport (or at least it feels like that), and hopefully having more time to meself.
I am looking forward to all the celebrations this Christmas. When I say celebrations I do really mean all the talk, songs, readings and thoughts about my Saviour Jesus Christ. He is Christ the Lord
I hope to post some pictures of my beautiful country during my days here. I am home until 3rd January when I have an evening flight back to Manchester. I'm not thinking that far in advance anyway.
Aahhhhh, Norn Iron

Why? Jesus!

Ok guys,
I just want to share some things that I've found amazing and exciting this Christmas time as I've opened this passage with different age groups in church.

Luke 2 v 8-20

I hope you guys want to read on.

Ok, so let me type this passage out for you from the NLT -

That night some shepherds were in the fields outside the village, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them. They were terribly frightened, but the angel reassured them.
"Don't be afraid!" he said. "I bring you good news of great joy for everyone! The Saviour - yes, the Messiah, the Lord - has been born tonight in Bethlehem, the city of David! And this is how you will recognize Him: You will find a baby lying in a manger, wrapped snugly in strips of cloth!"

Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others - the armies of heaven - praising God:

"Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and peace on earth to all whom God favours"

When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, "Come on, let's go to Bethlehem! Let's see this wonderful thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
They ran to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. Then the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherds' story were astonished, but Mary quietly treasured these things in her heart and thought about them often. The shepherds went back to their fields and flocks, glorifying and praising God for what the angels had told them, and because they had seen the child, just as the angel had said.

Ok, so I have shared my thoughts and feelings on this passage with a few different groups now, both in a school and in church and I hope that you will appreciate and be encouraged by some of my thoughts on this. I am not preaching at you guys, merely sharing what God has showed me through this passage. This may take a few minutes to read through so I hope you have the time to sit and read through this all.

For me, this is exciting, so exciting! I hope you look at this passage and the other passages of the birth story this Christmas with non-nursery rhyme glasses. I hope you all see the opening chapters of both Luke and Matthew for the pure excitement and celebration of Jesus' birth that they are.

I love this first verse, the idealic and lovely Christmas scene-"That night some shepherds were in the fields outside the village, guarding their flocks of sheep". I love that because immediately after it follows verse 9 which begins with a, "suddenly"! Bam! There we have it, one verse to enjoy the stereotypical Christmas scene before, wha-mo! We get an angel right in front of us!

What I love about the same verse is that the angel goes on to say, "Don't be afraid" as these shepherds are probably wetting themselves by now! God is love. We see that here. He doesn't come to frighten or impress us with big shows, bright lights and sound effects, He just sends His angel who happens to radiate light as he has just come from the presence of the Almighty God. God says, "Don't be afraid", God is love.

The angel says, "I bring you good news of great joy for everyone!" This angel has got the best news man is ever going to hear - Jesus is born. The thing is, this good news is not just for shepherds. It's not just for people in Israel. It's not just for Jews. It's not just for Christians. "Good news of great joy for everyone!" Christmas is not just for Christians to celebrate. Christmas is not just another winter festival. This angel spoke of good news "for everyone!" This is not an exclusive club. This is not to be kept to ourselves. You cannot get anymore inclusive than "everyone". You could say, "everybody". You could stick with, "everyone". Everyone means, everyone. Do you get my point?
This Christmas, are you going to invite your non-Christian friends to a Christmas service? Are you going to spread this good news? Are you going to write on your Christmas cards to your Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, Atheist friends, "Jesus was born for you"?

I just love the excitement building up here, the angel says in verse 11, "The Saviour - yes, the Messiah, the Lord". He just blurts out a whole host of names for Jesus! He isn't holding back, he can't!
"The Saviour - yes, the Messiah, the Lord - has been born tonight in Bethlehem, the city of David!" WWHHHOOOOO HHHHHOOOOOOOO! God has sent us His Son! Hallelujah! Can you feel the excitement! Can you count the exclamation marks in this passage?! It's brilliant! Fantastic news!

But just look at this - "you will find a baby lying in a manger, wrapped snugly in strips of cloth!" (another exclamation mark). This is our King. This is our Saviour. This is our Lord. This is our Messiah and look at Him, look, He is lying in an animal's feeding trough, wrapped in left over blankets in the form of a baby. This is the man who grew up to have huge nails driven through His hands so the Romans and Jews could keep Him pinned to a wooden cross to watch Him die. This is the man who took all our sin upon Him and suffered unimaginable physical, mental and spiritual suffering, just for us. This is the same man who overcame death just so we could have eternal life.
But look at Him here. He is in an animal's feeding trough, wrapped in left over cloth, in the form of a baby. Wow. One word - humility.

"Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others - the armies of heaven - praising God"
More excitement! The angels just pour out of heaven, "the armies of heaven" burst forth in pure and utter praise of God. Amazing! So amazing! I'm sure by this stage the other angels just couldn't hold themselves back and just came flooding out of heaven, the Lord, the Saviour, the Messiah is born! WHOOOO HOOOOO!

In verse 14, the first Christmas carol is sung,
"Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and peace on earth to all whom God favours"
Yet again, praise for God and excitement as these angels now burst into song, they cannot keep this within themselves!

What was the reaction of the shepherds though once they had sang and returned to heaven? More fear? Bemusement? Confusion? None of it! Excitement! Enthusiasm! Taxi to Bethlehem, and step on it! These guys can't wait! They have caught the excitement bug off these angels, they can't sit still, they want to get straight down to Bethlehem!
And how do they get there? By taking their time riding on the back of a sheep? Nope! verse 16 says, "they ran". I'm sure Mary and Joseph wondered why these out of breath shepherds were standing watching their baby!

Verse 17 says, "then the shepherds told everyone". There's that word again, "everyone". It doesn't say that the shepherds stopped every person they passed, put a questionaire to them, asked them if they had been to church before, asked them their religious background, asked them what job they had and can they open up church on Sunday morning for 9.30am. They told, "everyone". Who is the good news for? Everyone! Get out there and tell them! Are you as excited about the good news as these shepherds were?

In verse 18 it says, "all who heard the shepherds' story were astonished". Do you doubt the power of the good news? Do you wonder why you seem to talk about Jesus and get a lukewarm reception at best? Do you even sometimes wonder is it even worth telling people? Well look here, the people were "astonished". People were interested. People were more than interested, they found this amazing, fascinating, fantastic! Get out there and tell the people the good news, it's astonishing!

I love verse 19. Mary just took all these things and "treasured them in her heart and thought about them often". I'm sure by this stage, maybe some of this was only sinking in for Mary. She has just given birth to the Son of God and according to some olympic sprint shepherds, an angel told them about this baby. I can understand Mary taking her time to think this over. What do you do with challenges and amazing happenings in your life given by God? Do you think them over and keep them in your heart or do you just allow them to sail on by?

Verse 20, right at the end of this passage says that the shepherds were, "glorifying and praising God". Do you do that when God gives you good news? Do you think things over like Mary and then glorify and praise God? Do you thank Him for amazing things He does in your life?

Why did they praise and glorify God? "For what the angels had told them, and because they had seen the child just as the angel had said." When God shows you amazing things, when He specifically and directly answers your prayers, do you praise and glorify Him? When He keeps His word with you, do you praise and glorify Him?

I know that on so many occasions, I fall short of even thinking about God when something great happens. When I selfishly ask God to give me a goal in football that night and He, in His kindness gives me one, I don't even thank my own team mate for the pass for the goal, let alone thank God for answering my selfish prayer. When my dad's health improves after me asking God for that exact action, I don't praise and glorify Him. It takes me a few days at best before I realise what God has done.

I want to be more like these shepherds. I want to act on God's word immediately. I want to have no doubts about the power of the good news. I want to tell every person on the face of this planet about God's amazing gift this Christmas. I want to be unashamed as I tell everyone, not just Christians, about Jesus' birth. Who cares when He was born, was it summer, was it winter, it doesn't matter, the fact of the matter is, Jesus came to earth in the form of a baby so He could grow up just to die for us.

This Christmas, see the excitement of Jesus, see the excitement of the good news, see the excitement of what God has told us in His Word. This is not another nursery rhyme. This is not an idea for the design on a card. This is not an excuse for food and drink. This is the time to tell your non-Christian friends the great and exciting news that, "The Saviour - yes, the Messiah, the Lord - has been born".

Potential to explode into anything, stand well back

Hello folks,
Just from reading Janice's blog and Lesbo's comment on there, it seems, judging just from them two, that everyone has dropped off the face of the earth and is not blogging. I cannot confirm or de-confirm either way if everyone has dropped off the face of the earth or if Lesbo and Janice are involved in a conspiracy with the Canadian government to spread vicious talk of blogging drying up for the Christmas season. I do not know. But I will seek out an answer.

If it takes talking to Jacque Shirac and his Canadian government, I shall. If it means looking up Lesbo's records and C.V. with Greenpeace to see if she has any background in politics, I shall. If it means talking to Janice Rae's family to discover if she has been to the pharmacy to pick up the appropriate regular prescribed medication, I shall.

I just do not like the feeling and the change in wind that is prompting such conspiracers to talk in such a negative and quite frankly damaging way. This is not acceptable and in my humble opinion, is not good for blogging for a number of reasons - 1. It is downgrading the quality of blogging that does take place, that has been overlooked by the previous named people 2. It does not fill current bloggers, or new bloggers for that matter, with a great amount of confidence that their blogging is up to scratch and 3. Pressure could be piled on to bloggers all across t'interweb to blog more often, more than is humanly possible, and in turn, these bloggers could be overlooking and neglecting essential daily rituals and routines such as rotating their goldfish, washing their lightbulbs or even, dare I say it, licking the inside of their granda's ears.

An honest and acceptable outcome must be reached. This current behaviour and slander must be overcome and put to bed.

End of transmission.

0-5 year old children, I need your help

Hello folks,
Well, I'm just in from what is called, "Squeels on Wheels" for the 0-5 year olds and I had to do the wee talky bit.
It was the first time I have ever taught/talked to/addressed this age group and I felt it was a bit of a disaster.
I had 5 minutes and did a simple talk with them.
The ladies who help said after that they have found it hard to address them because they just run around and the mums just talk.
A lot of non Christian mums come in and the talk was half aimed at them as well as the kids.
I just found it difficult and a bit discouraging.
There was one wee guy who helped opened the presents at the front as part of the talk and so I aimed a lot of it at him as he seemed to be the only one listening.
I want to open this up to you all, I need your help.
I was wondering if some of you who read this and have worked with that age group or know of other people who have worked/work with that age group could help me? Can I just have your ideas, thoughts, feelings, techniques, anything really that is remotely helpful on how to deal with this age group or how to teach them.
I feel God has gifted me in working with children and young people but I struggle so much with this age group. I don't particularly like working with that age group anyway and when it came to doing the talk today, it was something I did not enjoy at all.
Any body want to say anything on it all? Please post. Thank you

God bless Mexico. My Mexican co-worker made a snowman pineta (dunno how to spell it, not too worried either) and he wisely, very wisely, put flour in in. Pure genius that boy. We did it with like 5/6 11-14 year olds too. Pure genius. I got it in my ears, my eyes, my nose and of course all over my clothes. God bless Mexico Posted by Picasa

This is me just after footy on Tuesday. This is a wee treat for my Korean friends. I got this Korean footy shirt off ebay. You want to hear a funny story behind it all? I bought a large and got an xlarge. Hilarious, I know. Posted by Picasa

My second newsletter from Cheadle Hulme (10th Dec)

Merry Christmas everyone! Can I firstly just wish everyone a happy Christmas and a peaceful new year.

It has been a wee while since my first newsletter from Cheadle Hulme so I thought it'd be good to update you all on goings on here in south Manchester.

I am still busy busy and especially now leading up to Christmas. There are parties, services, Bible studies and so on to be organised but thankfully I'm not in charge of them all! We have had one primary school using our church for their carol service and another one to come. We have parties in the different age groups to either organise or be a part of. I myself have Bible study with the 14+ age group when we'll be looking at the Christmas story and actually studying it, so that should be good.

Work outside of all the Christmas activities has been good and bad. I say bad, I think what I really mean is a bit frustrating. The good first though. I have had so many opportunities to teach, whether that be with the Kids Klub age group (5-9 year olds) or with Nxt_Stop (11-14) or with Impact (14+). I really enjoy doing that if I'm being honest and I love seeing more of God as I prepare each different talk, it's great! I also have such a great team who I work with. Becky, who is the full time youth worker in church, Daniel, who is on a year out and working with a group called Careforce but who is based in our church and also Lynne who doesn't work for the church but who gives of so much time to work with us and be a part of the team. I am so thankful for them all, what a strong team God has put together.

The frustrating things have really been my visits on a Wednesday to Cheadle Hulme School. This was the opportunity I was most excited and looking forward to when I came over here but at the minute, it's just been so stop-start. I have been in one week, then not the next three. Or in one week and not the next. It's been frustrating really. The hardest thing I find about this school is that there is no Jesus. I walk in to classes and, for example, the year 8s (12/13 year olds) tell me that the first book of the Bible is Geneva! Geneva!? That's in Switzerland!

That is the main frustration though. Dealing with different issues that arrive within church life is also all part and parcel of the job too. At least when dealing with those situations no one tells you that Geneva is the first book of the Bible.

I realised in my last newsletter I didn't say much about my living arrangements. I am living with Chris, an English guy and an actor with a Christian theatre company, Peter from South Africa who works in a local pub and Daniel from Mexico who is one of my co-workers. Let me tell you, I am so thankful to God for providing this house and such good guys to live with. Chris, Daniel and I often spend many a long night in Chris' room on the playstation which happens to be linked up to a 55'' plasma screen!

Let me just wrap this up by thanking you all for your support and by updating you on possible prayer requests. Thank you once again for either talking to me, supporting me, praying for me, making me smile or even just taking the time to read this. Thank you.

Please pray for-
1.God to be glorified and shown in all His truth and glory when I am teaching
2.The opportunity and priveledge of Cheadle Hulme School not to be taken away
3.An enjoyable and peaceful break when I'm home between 22nd December and 3rd January
4.For Lynne, Becky, Daniel and I to continue working as a God-filled and God-centred team

Thank you once again for your support.

Let me just end by wishing you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year. Do take time out this Christmas though to remember why Jesus came to earth and just what His life means. He is Christ the Lord.
Jonathan

My first newsletter from Cheadle Hulme (October 11th)

Hello everyone!Cheadle Hulme, south Manchester has a new resident. That's me.I've been in Cheadle Hulme for about a month now and for me,this is my new home for the foreseeable future. My year at Bible school at Capernwray Hall has been and gone and as I write this, a brand new student is sleeping in my old bed at Capernwray.

My time of working at Capernwray in the summer has been and gone also.I had an amazing summer and saw God work in me in ways I hadn't previously let Him.Times in the summer were hard but I could see at the end of it that things had changed in me and I came out the better for it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again,God is good and all the time.

I'm in south Manchester now starting what most people would call my new 'job'.I don't quite see it that way though.God has given me a huge priveledge and opportunity to talk about Him day-in,day-out and I really can't see that priveledge and opportunity as a 'job'.I love working with God each day and it's such a blessing and honour to do so.

I am currently in Orrishmere Primary School on a Monday morning and Cheadle Hulme School, which is a grammar school, all day Wednesday. In Orrishmere I am with the 7 year olds as a bit of a classroom assistant and then in Religious Studies classes all day Wednesday in Cheadle Hulme School with the students any age between 11 and 16.

As well as that I am of course doing things at church and along with Becky and Daniel, the other two youth workers,we are in charge of the 0-30 year olds.I am mainly with the 5-11 year olds and the 14+ age group but will of course be involved with the other ages too.

There is a training day every Thursday that I go to,at Leyland near Preston and that has already been beneficial. We are starting up in our small groups soon where we'll have to teach or lead a Bible study on a passage in 1 Thessalonians aimed at young people so that should be a good challenge.

I do love it all as I get to play around with the kids, teach different ages, lead Bible studies, talk to multi-faith classes in schools about God,play football, learn more of God and the Bible, run fun activities, get along side the youth and generally be involved in church life. It's all good!

Just as I close,I would like to leave you with some things you can be talking to God about on my behalf,
1. Thank God for this amazing priveledge and opportunity
2. That God would use me to challenge some of the young people in the schools I visit
3. That I would work well with Daniel and Becky
4. Finally, that I wouldn't get too lost in the 'work' and still take time out with God

Thank you all once again for either your support, prayer or just being there for me to talk to.Thank you all,
Jonathan

I am sorry,I gave in

What can I say? I am sorry, I gave in
